The Reckless Sellsword

Throwing caution to the wind, this fighter focuses on dealing as much damage as they can, in as little time as possible. Forsakes the healing ability and is left with just the most basic level of HP improvement, but in return, gets natural counter attack, further improves the physical attack of the party, and gets a lot of damage options in their arsenal.

They are often motivated by financial and/or personal gains and are not necessarily bound by any particular code of ethics of loyalty. As such, they are known for being opportunistic and willing to take on any well-paying jobs. This is reflected in their combat style where they are known for taunting and riling up their opponents. They use this tactic to try goad their enemies into making mistakes or acting recklessly. Instead of taking on more difficult opponent, they might opt to wrangle a more vulnerable target, dragging them to the front line of battle in order to take them out easily. They will not hesitate to counterattack when you show any sort of openings in your attacks. While Mercenary may not always be the most honorable or trustworthy warriors, they are skilled at what they do and can be a valuable asset in any conflict.

Unlock

Mercenary is a tier 2 class that is unlocked by leveling the Warrior class to level 25.

Pros and Cons

Comparisons are made considering classes from the same tier

Mercenary has a strong AoE skill Low Sweep very useful if YOLO hunting. Another core skill is Eye For An Eye which improves the damage output. Mercenary can also hit with melee weapons on range 3 thanks to the Bounty Wrangle skill, to make use of this ability you have to min/max script per hunt. Survivability is minimal, but not non-existent thanks to Second Wind. The buff utility is low, because Battle Roar is a flat bonus to PATK, this means it is good early on, but eventually it falls off. Like similar classes, it doesn't have bonus HIT on skills or an HIT passive or buff, which is a major negative.

Stats

Mercenary damages scales from STR and accuracy from DEX.

Like every class Mercenary benefits also from WIS for MDEF,MPREGENERATION and from VIT for PDEF, HP.

Gear

Axe is a must for Low Sweep farming, from tier 4 the COUNTERATTACK branch also stacks with Eye For An Eye.

Heavy Armor gives better scaling with Second Wind.

Medium Armor is good with good pieces, EVA doesn't influence COUNTERATTACK chance.

Ideas and suggestions

These are all suggestions, you can't have 1 script which is perfect for every hunt and every gear

  • Add Second Wind on low hp or similar conditions to improve survivability.
  • Prioritize AoE damage by moving up in Low Sweep.
  • Use Step Forward on not reachable foes at the end for script simplicity.
  • Change mp checks on attack to have at least 25 MP for casting Battle Roar.
  • Add foe conditions on damage skills based on hp, pdef, ... (This is not used in the script below)
  • Bounty Wrangle is useful at the top of the damage skills if you want to kill a specific foe at range. This is doable for single hunts: you want to prioritize this foe by using highest/lowest stat conditions after researching the bestiary. This kind of scripts needs to be changed per hunt. (This is not used in the script below)
